Missed Voter Registration? Here’s How You Can Still Vote in California

Posted

If you missed voter registration for this upcoming election day, there are still ways to cast your ballot. Here’s how same-day voter registration works.

Who Is Eligible?

You must be a U.S. citizen, reside in California and be at least 18 years old as of election day.

Where Do I Register?

All eligible citizens who need to register to vote within 14 days of an election can complete this process. Citizens can register at county elections offices, polling places or vote centers. The California Secretary of State’s office posted a list of early voting locations for the Same Day Voter Registration Process.

In-person voting centers remain open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can also register to vote on Election Day, anytime before polls close at 8 p.m.

What Do I Bring to the Polls?

In order to apply, you will need a state driver’s license or California identification card number, or you can use the last four numbers on your Social Security card.

Even if you’ve become a U.S. citizen less than 15 days before election day, you can still visit your county elections office before the polls close. You can provide proof of your citizenship and sign a form confirming you are eligible to vote in the state.

Where Will My Ballot Go?

Your ballot will be anonymous, but the election officials will provide you with an envelope that designates it as a provisional ballot. Your vote will be counted once officials have verified your voting eligibility. Look out for communications from the county elections office to confirm your information in the following days.

All Californians can track the status of their ballot at this link.
