FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A wanted man was fatally shot Tuesday morning after the man fired a gun at police trying to serve a warrant, the Fort Wayne Police Department said.
The suspect killed has not been identified. Police say the officers who fired their weapons have been placed on five days’ administrative leave.
The incident happened around 7:20 a.m. in the 3100 Elmdale Drive. That’s in a residential area on the city’s south side, east of State Road 27.
Fort Wayne police say the department’s Emergency Services Team was trying to serve a search warrant when a man inside a building on the property started firing.
Officers retreated, then returned fire, striking the suspect at least once. The man died at the scene.
Police say one officer was hurt, but sustained injuries while retreating and was not shot.
Indiana State Police will be conducting a separate investigation into the incident. Investigators say more information will be released when it becomes available.
